"I will NEVER stop until I get back the hard drive containing $783 million in Bitcoin that my ex-girlfriend threw in the trash." James Howells attempted to sue Newport City Council to access the location of his hard drive.
It's been more than ten years since James Howells's hard drive, containing Bitcoins now worth hundreds of millions of dollars, ended up in an industrial waste dump.
"This is my job, so to speak. My work day," he said. Rule out giving up.
The cryptocurrency's value has increased dramatically in recent months, and with the hard drive currently valued at around US$783 million, Howells said it "makes sense to focus as much of my energy on this as possible."
Howells, a resident of Newport, England, claimed that his ex-partner mistakenly threw away the hard drive (what a mistake!) containing around 8,000 Bitcoins in 2013, and it ended up in an industrial landfill owned by Newport City Council.
Now, with the help of artificial intelligence to legally represent himself, he is preparing an appeal to the Court of Appeal.
He says his ex-partner accidentally threw away the hard drive, which contained a Bitcoin wallet, in 2013. As its value increased massively, he organized a team of experts to try to recover it.
He described AI as "an incredible and amazing technology" that had helped him better understand court processes and the law, and that he believed he had "solid legal grounds" for his case, which he hopes to present in person soon at the Court of Appeal.
After years of trying to recover it, Howells said he was certain the hard drive remained at the landfill, which contains more than 1.4 million tons of waste.
He said he confirmed this after speaking with a landfill manager.
"Everything that was put there is still there."
And what would you do in the face of such tragedy, losing something that could change your life? Would you keep hope alive until you achieved the almost impossible?
